The BIOCORE international workshop on challenges and opportunities for lignocellulosic bio-refineries with a special focus on the social, legal, and political assessment will take place in Brussels on 5th March 2013. The workshop will have an interactive format, which will provide participants with ample opportunities to share opinions with other experts on hot topics linked to the social, legal and policy issues that will influence the development of advanced biorefining and the expected impacts thereof of this future industrial activity. For more information, please contact Sylvain Doublet at the following address : sylvain.doublet@solagro.asso.fr The 1st BIOCORE Technical Note presents the potential of lignin‑based technology and partners’ achievements on bio-based products using lignin. The Integrated Project BIOSYNERGY (2007-2010) aims to develop multi-product biorefinery
technologies for lignocellulosic biomass, notably straw. A strong focus area of the project is the
valorisation of byproducts (pentoses, lignins) of cellulosic ethanol production. The ambition is to
develop synergistic biorefinery concepts, using advanced fractionation and conversion processes
and a combination of biochemical and thermo-chemical pathways, including demonstration at pilot
scale of selected technologies developed in the project.
The workshop will highlight the main results of the BIOSYNERGY project in the areas of
lignocellulose pre-treatment and fractionation, innovative thermo-chemical conversion, biochemical
conversion and chemical synthesis of biobased products including application testing. Furthermore
the workshop will highlight results of the modeling and design work, including designs of a cellulose
ethanol based biorefinery and results of a developed methodology for identification of the most
promising biorefinery chains for the EU, based on energy efficiency, economics, environmental
impact and socio-economic aspects.
Two BIOCORE partners receive awards in the 5th edition of the Pierre POTIER prize for chemical innovations in favor of sustainable development.
Arkema was awarded a trophy in the “product” category its Kynar Aquatec® resin and CIMV received a medal in the “process” categoryfor its original biorefining concept.
Arkema and CIMV faced 30 other French companies in this annual competition, which is organized by the French Federation of Chemical Sciences (FFC) in collaboration with the Chemical Industry Union (UIC).
